Yams, one of the oldest cultivated vegetables, have around 200 different varieties. Yams pack a powerful nutritional punch, and are known for their high levels of vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. Often overlooked for its health benefits, yams offer a diverse range of phytonutrients that improve overall health and vitality.

Yams also contain diosgenin, a phyto-estrogen, which has been used to treat various pre-menstrual and menopausal symptoms. Yams offer many unique nutritional benefits.
 

Protection Against Cardiovascular Disease

Yams are a good source of vitamin B6. This particular vitamin is required to help prohibit the deterioration of blood vessel. A proper intake of vitamin B6 may help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Yams are also a good source of potassium, which further helps maintain normal blood pressure and reduce the risk of hypertension.
 

PMS and Menopausal Symptoms

Yams contain diosgenin. It is believed that the presence of this phyto-estrogen is helpful in treating both premenstrual and menopausal symptoms. Traditionally, yams have been used to treat related cramps, pain and muscle tension. Yams are chalk-full of complex carbohydrates. This, along with fiber, after consuming yams, you will feel fuller for a longer period of time. This is due to the gradual spike in insulin after the consumption of complex carbohydrates, therefore maintaining blood sugar levels.
