Itching is a skin irritation resulting in the urge to scratch the affected area. Itching is medically known as pruritus. An itch may be accompanied by a rash, bruising or a result of another illness. Common causes of itching include dry skin, stress, anxiety, endocrine conditions, reaction to medications or drugs, allergic reactions, insect bites, sexually transmitted diseases, among others.
Home Remedies for Itch
- Take a warm bath which contains a few cups of oatmeal. This will help calm the skin and prevent itching.
- Sprinkle cornstarch to the affected area.
- Increase your consumption of fresh colourful fruits and vegetables. This will provide your body with nourishing vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, fiber and phytochemicals. Also, increase the consumption of foods that contain anti-oxidants to help fight inflammation.
- Mix together honey and cinnamon powder. Apply this paste to the affected area to help alleviate the itching sensation.
- Mix together coconut oil and fresh lime juice. Apply to the affected area to help cure itching.
- Applying Aloe Vera gel to the affected area is a common remedy to help cure itching.
- Mix together water and baking soda. Apply this to the area where itching occurs.
- An old traditional remedy for itching involves boiling neem leaves in water. Once the liquid has cooled, apply this mix to the affected area. Neem is widely used to treat many skin concerns and disorders.
- Apply the juice of bitter gourd (karela) to the affected area. This is a very effective treatment of itching.
