Blueberries are packed with beneficial nutrients and phytochemicals. Blueberries have extremely high antioxidant levels and are potent in naturalizing free radicals in the body. Blueberries are also nutrient dense and are a source of vitamin C, vitamin E and dietary fiber.

Anthocyanidins are the powerful active antioxidants found in blueberries. Anthocyanins are also what give blueberries their intense blue colour. These compounds have extremely high antioxidant activity, making blueberries a powerful super food.

Research has shown that blueberries may be able to protect against oxidative damage within the brain, thereby protecting against conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
 

Blueberries and Cancer Protection

Blueberries contain the antioxidant compound, ellagic acid. Ellagic acid can help reduce the risk of cancer. Furthermore, anthyocyanins, flavonoids, tannins and phenolic compounds may reduce the risk of colon cancer. Blueberries also include a flavonoid called kaempferol which may reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.
 

Blueberries and Gastro-Intestinal Health

Due to their fiber qualities, Blueberries can help relieve many gastro-intestinal issues, including diarrhea, constipation and inflammation within that region. Blueberries also reduce the risk of urinary tract infections. Blueberries may also contribute to the reduction of cholesterol.
